Tongkat Ali

Tongkat Ali

Tongkat Ali is an adaptogenic herb, originally worked with by the Indigenous people of Malaysian rainforests, and now worked with by populations worldwide.

Clinical trials exploring Tongkat Ali caught the attention of health professionals and scientists, such as Dr Andrew Huberman, due to an observed and experienced range of health benefits including improvement in stress hormone profiles: lower cortisol and higher testosterone (Huberman, 2024).

Traditionally, Tongkat Ali has been used to treat a variety of conditions. The root is used, particularly for men, to increase physical strength, fight ageing, aid recovery from physical work and exercise, as an adaptogen for stress and as an aphrodisiac; it is renowned for its ability to naturally optimise testosterone levels, improve endurance, and promote well-being (Rehman & Choe, 2016).

It is predicted that more than 790,000 men in the UK are currently experiencing low testosterone, with this number rising (H3 Health, 2023).

Recommendations

Andrew Huberman recommends taking 400 milligrams per day of Tongkat Ali, typically early in the day because it can have a mild stimulating effect. It has been suggested that taking it after 02:00 p.m. might interfere with sleep. As for whether to cycle Tongkat Ali or take it continuously, Dr. Huberman has mentioned that he does not cycle Tongkat Ali and has been taking it continuously for years without issues, although he does regular blood work to monitor key health indicators such as liver enzymes (Huberman, 2024).

Based on this information, taking Tongkat Ali in the morning seems to be the best practice to avoid any potential interference with sleep and might provide a mild stimulant effect beneficial during the day. Always consult with a healthcare professional before starting any new supplement regimen to ensure it's appropriate for your health needs.
